Via XI Maggio

Pedestrian spine of the old town, named for Garibaldi's landing date

Via XI Maggio is the long pedestrian street that bisects the old town from Porta Nuova to Piazza della Repubblica. It is named for the date of Garibaldi's landing in 1860 and is lined with baroque palazzi, small chapels, and the slowest, busiest passeggiata in Marsala.

Most of the city's smarter shops, several wine bars, and a couple of the better gelaterias sit along it. In the late afternoon, when the limestone glows pale gold, it is one of the more pleasant places to walk in western Sicily.
