Ragusa Cathedral (San Giovanni Battista)

The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista in Ragusa Superiore — the upper, modern town — is often overlooked in favour of the more famous Duomo di San Giorgio in Ibla, but it has considerable Baroque merit of its own. Construction began in 1706 after the earthquake of 1693 and was completed in 1760, with a broad piazza in front giving the facade room to breathe.

The interior is notable for its painted vault ceiling and the quality of its carved marble altars. If you arrive in the upper town first, the cathedral is worth the detour before descending to Ibla. The area around it has the bustle of a working town that the tourist-polished lanes of Ibla sometimes lack.
