Ragusa

Sicilian Baroque hill city split between modern Ragusa Superiore and labyrinthine UNESCO-listed Ragusa Ibla

Ragusa is really two towns in one. The upper town, Ragusa Superiore, is modern and orderly. The lower town, Ragusa Ibla, is the real draw: a maze of Baroque palaces, churches, and steep stairways rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photogenic towns in Sicily.

The Duomo di San Giorgio, with its soaring facade, dominates Ibla's skyline. The restaurants here are excellent, and the surrounding countryside produces some of Sicily's best olive oil and chocolate from nearby Modica.
