Liepāja Lighthouse

The Liepāja Lighthouse stands near the entrance to the port canal, a slender red-and-white tower that has been guiding ships into the harbour since the late 19th century. It is not open for internal visits, but the setting around it — near the northern breakwater where the canal meets the Baltic — makes it worth the walk.

From the lighthouse you get a clear view of the port operations on one side and the open Baltic on the other. In winter especially, when storms come in from the northwest, waves crash over the breakwater with considerable force. The adjacent monument to sailors and fishermen lost at sea is one of the more affecting memorials in the city — a simple figurative sculpture on a low plinth, not heroic, just mournful.
