Popova Shapka Ski Resort

Mountain resort above Tetovo with skiing, hiking and panoramic Shar Mountain views

Popova Shapka (Bishop's Hat) sits 18 kilometres up an asphalt road from Tetovo, at around 1,780 metres in the Shar Mountains. In winter it operates as a ski resort with several lifts and runs for all ability levels — one of the more accessible ski areas in North Macedonia. The season runs roughly December to March, with reliable snow cover most years at this altitude.

In summer the mountain is better for hiking than skiing. Trails lead further up into the Shar range toward alpine lakes and high ridges, with views across the Polog Valley to the Albanian border. Paragliders launch from the slopes when conditions allow. The village of Popova Shapka has a handful of restaurants and guesthouses, making it viable as an overnight stop if you want to explore the mountains properly. The drive up from Tetovo alone is worth doing for the views.
