Tetovo's appeal is modest but genuine. The Painted Mosque and the Bektashi tekke are among the finest Ottoman monuments in the western Balkans, and the Shar Mountains rising immediately behind town make for dramatic scenery. Most of what the city offers can be covered in half a day, leaving time for the mountains.
