King Nikola Palace

The King Nikola Palace (Dvorac Kralja Nikole) on the edge of the Morača river is a modest royal residence built in 1890s style, now housing the City Museum. The museum covers the history of Podgorica and Montenegro from the medieval period through to the 20th century. The building and its small park are pleasant, and the museum provides useful context for understanding how this relatively unremarkable-looking capital became the seat of an independent state.

Montenegro was one of the few Balkan countries to never fully succumb to Ottoman rule — it retained its mountainous independence from Cetinje (the old capital, 40km south) — and the museum's displays on that era are the most interesting section. Admission is modest.
