Stara Varoš is Podgorica's Ottoman-era quarter, the oldest surviving part of the city and its most atmospheric corner. The neighbourhood clusters around the old bazaar area near the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, where the medieval settlement of Ribnica once stood before the Ottomans expanded it into a proper town. Walk the narrow lanes and you find the clock tower, the old mosque, a hammam ruin, and low stone houses that survived the 20th-century rebuilding that replaced most of Podgorica with Yugoslav concrete.
The quarter is compact — you can walk it in under an hour — but worth an unhurried exploration. The Osmanagić Mosque (Džamija Osmanagića) is still in use and dates from the 17th century. The small square around the clock tower is a pleasant place to sit in the evening, when locals gather at the handful of cafes.
