Java Island is the most conventional of the Eastern Docklands developments — a long, narrow finger of land divided into four sections, each given to a different architect, arranged around a single main canal crossed by a series of footbridges. The residential blocks are four and five storeys, varied in facade treatment but consistent in scale, which makes the island read as a coherent whole despite the multiple hands involved.
It's pleasant to walk the full length of the island and back along the canal side — quieter and less visited than Sporenburg, with a more domestic, lived-in feel.
