The Lloyd Hotel was built in 1921 for emigrants waiting to board ships to the Dutch East Indies and South America, then served through the 20th century as an artists' studio complex, a prison, and a refugee detention centre before reopening in 2004 as a deliberately unconventional design hotel — rooms range from one-star to five-star, with wildly different layouts and furnishing by different designers, priced accordingly.
The restaurant, open to non-guests, is the real reason to visit even if you're not staying: a grand double-height room under the original building's structure, serving a seasonal Dutch-leaning menu, with a cultural embassy and small library attached that hosts talks and events. It's one of the few places on KNSM Island worth a special trip rather than just a walk-past.
