A combined city hall and opera house on the Amstel, built in the 1980s. The name is a portmanteau of stadhuis (city hall) and opera. It generated huge protests when built — partly the cost overruns, partly the displacement of the Waterlooplein market — and remains controversial. The Dutch National Opera and the Dutch National Ballet both perform here.
