Europe > Netherlands > Arcen
Arcen is a small Limburg village on the Maas, north of Venlo and close to the German border. Its centre is pretty enough for a wander, but the reason to come is the cluster around it: castle gardens, beer, thermal water, and the Maasduinen landscape.
The Castle Gardens are the headline, especially from spring through autumn. Hertog Jan Brewery gives the village a second, very Dutch reason to stop, and the riverfront keeps the day from feeling like a set of ticketed attractions.
Arcen is not a must-cross-the-country destination. It is a good Limburg day if you are already near Venlo, the Maas, or the German border and want something gentler than another city centre.
