Hofje van Pauw

Quiet 18th-century almshouse courtyard showing Delft's gentler side north of the old centre.

Hofje van Pauw is one of those small Dutch courtyards that rewards slowing down. It was founded in the early 18th century as an almshouse, and its low brick houses still sit around a neat garden just north of Delft's busiest historic streets. Compared with the Markt and the Prinsenhof, it feels almost private.

Come for a short detour rather than a headline sight. The charm is in the scale: clipped planting, old doorways, and the sense of how charity, religion, and domestic architecture once overlapped in a compact Dutch city. Keep voices low if the gate is open; hofjes are historic places, but many are also still residential.
