Flat polder roads through peatland and farmland — ideal cycling from the village

The flat polder landscape around Giethoorn is excellent cycling territory. Bikes are available to rent from several places near the village entrance, and the Dutch numbered-node cycle network (knooppunten) makes it easy to plan routes of any length without a detailed map. The landscape is immediately rewarding: dyke paths, reed beds, and working farmland alternate with views across open water.

The route through Steenwijk and along the Wold Aa stream is particularly good for a half-day ride — a mix of canal-side paths, small villages, and polder scenery. Cycling north into Weerribben-Wieden National Park brings you into progressively quieter and more biodiverse landscape, with bird hides and observation points accessible by bike along several of the dyke routes. Unlike the canals in the village centre, the countryside is quiet even in summer, and a bicycle is the most practical way to escape the day-trip crowds without hiring a boat.
