Kerktjetje

The small wooden church in the old village, surrounded by water on three sides

The Kerktjetje — "little church" in local dialect — is a small wooden church in the oldest part of the village, surrounded by water on three sides and accessible only by a narrow wooden bridge. It is one of the most photographed spots in Giethoorn, and justifiably so: the combination of the thatched surroundings, the water, and the modest scale of the building makes it a picture that reads as quintessentially Dutch.

The church still holds occasional services and is open to visitors outside service times. It is small enough to see in a few minutes, but the setting rewards a longer pause — particularly early in the morning before the day-trip crowds arrive. The churchyard beside it is peaceful and well kept.
