Whisper Boat Hire

The definitive Giethoorn experience — drift the canals in a near-silent electric punt

Hiring a whisper boat is not optional in Giethoorn — it is the whole point of being here. The boats are electric-powered and near-silent, small enough to navigate the narrowest channels, and simple enough that no prior boating experience is needed. You pick up a map with the rental, and from there you are on your own to explore at whatever pace you like.

Most rentals are by the hour or for a half-day. The main canal through the old village is the busiest and most photographed route; pushing further north and west into the channels leading toward Weerribben-Wieden National Park takes you into much quieter water. A couple of hours is enough for the village itself; a half-day gives you time to get genuinely lost in the peatland channels beyond. Rental companies are clustered near the main village entrance on the south side of the canal district.

A story
The whisper boats — small electric punts — are so called because their nearly silent motors barely disturb the water. The canal system threads through private gardens and under 52 wooden bridges, giving you views that are impossible to get on foot. Every hire company offers essentially the same boats at similar prices, so the choice of operator matters less than just going.
