The second of Leiden's two great medieval churches, the Hooglandse Kerk is dedicated to Saint Pancras. Like the Pieterskerk it lost its high tower in a collapse and was never given a proper one; the present squat brick tower at the west end is a stub. Inside, however, the church is vast and luminous, with bare brick piers and a sense of soaring vertical space.
The interior holds the elaborate tomb of Pieter Adriaensz van der Werf, the burgomaster who held Leiden against the Spanish siege of 1574 and is buried under his own monument here. The church is used for concerts and exhibitions and is usually open on summer afternoons.
