Pilgrim Museum Leiden

A tiny one-man museum dedicated to the Pilgrim Fathers' decade in Leiden before they sailed for Plymouth in 1620. The curator Jeremy Bangs, an American Pilgrim scholar, has filled three small rooms with 17th-century furniture, books, and household objects that the Pilgrims would have known.

It's not slick — it's a labour of love by someone who has spent decades on the subject — and that is precisely the appeal. An hour here gives more sense of what daily life was like in this corner of Leiden than any larger institution. Ring the bell, the door is sometimes locked.

A story
The museum is housed in a 14th-century building on the Beschuitsteeg — possibly the oldest privately-owned house in Leiden. The Pilgrims would have walked past it daily on their way to the Pieterskerk, and the period-furnished rooms inside give an idea of how they actually lived.
