Zhdun (Homunculus Loxodontus)

A slightly absurd sculpture of a pear-shaped figure with the head of an elephant seal sits outside the Leiden University Medical Centre. The artist Margriet van Breevoort created it to give patients waiting for hospital appointments something kindly to look at; in Russia, where the photograph spread online in 2017, it became a national meme nicknamed Zhdun.

It's a short tram or bike ride from the centre — combine it with a visit to Naturalis, which is on the same edge of town. Genuinely weird, briefly diverting, and one of the few unintentionally Russian things in the Netherlands.

A story
Margriet van Breevoort sculpted Homunculus Loxodontus for the Leiden University Medical Centre in 2016 as a quiet companion for waiting patients. Within a year a photograph of the sculpture went viral in Russia, where users renamed it "Zhdun" — "the one who waits" — and turned it into the most popular meme in the country.
