Morspoort and Zijlpoort

The Morspoort and Zijlpoort are the two surviving city gates of Leiden, both built in the 1660s and both still bridging their canals at the western and eastern edges of the old centre. The Morspoort, a graceful classical gate in white sandstone, was the first thing arrivals from The Hague saw after crossing the polders.

The Zijlpoort on the opposite side of town is a similar design in brick. Both have neat little parks beside them and make natural turn-around points for a walk around the perimeter of the old town along the singel canals.
