Rhine Riverside Walk

The Rhine bank south of town — dikes, flood plains, and river views

The Neder-Rijn (Lower Rhine) forms the southern boundary of Wageningen, and the dike road running along the north bank is one of the better short walks or bike rides in the area. From the town, it is a 10-minute walk or 5-minute cycle to reach the dike top, where the view opens over the wide braided river channel and the low polders on the far bank.

The flood plains between the dike and the river — called uiterwaarden — are managed as nature reserves and are good for birdwatching, particularly in winter when the meadows flood and attract wildfowl. In summer the river beaches at low water make for a pleasant picnic stop. The path connects west to Rhenen and east toward Arnhem, so it works well as part of a longer cycling day. The ferry crossing at Wageningen gives access to the south bank and the polder villages of the Betuwe.
