Wageningen University & Research

The world's top-ranked agricultural university, shaping the campus town

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is the reason this small Gelderland town has an outsized reputation. Ranked consistently as the world's leading university for agricultural sciences, it draws students and researchers from across the globe — walk the campus and you will hear half a dozen languages before you reach the canteen. Nearly a quarter of Wageningen's population are students.

The campus itself, spread across the wooded western edge of town, is worth a walk. The main Leeuwenborch and Forum buildings are functional modern architecture, but the surrounding gardens and tree-lined paths are genuinely pleasant. The campus bleeds into the town without a sharp boundary — the cafes and bike-choked streets of the centre are full of students. If you want to understand the Dutch dominance of global food science and agri-tech, a campus visit makes it tangible. The university also runs the World Soil Museum and various research gardens open to visitors.

A story
Wageningen UR consistently tops the global rankings for agricultural sciences. It is where much of the world's thinking about food security, plant breeding, and sustainable farming is done. Researchers here developed the techniques that made Dutch greenhouse horticulture the most productive on earth per square metre — a country roughly the size of West Virginia now feeds much of Europe.
