The Golden Route is the marketing name for the drive that links Åndalsnes and Geiranger via two of Norway's classic scenic roads — the Trollstigen pass and the Ørnesvingen ("Eagles' Road") down to the Geirangerfjord. The whole journey is around 110 km but takes most of a day if you stop properly at the viewpoints, the waterfalls, and the small towns on the way.
The route only runs from late May to October, when the Trollstigen pass is open. There is a public bus service in summer for travellers without a car, but driving yourself gives you the freedom to pull over whenever the view warrants it — which is often. The Geirangerfjord end of the trip ends with the famous switchbacks descending to the fjord village and the ferry across the water.
