Stigfossen

180-metre waterfall thundering past the Trollstigen switchbacks

Stigfossen is the waterfall that gives the Trollstigen its character. The river drops 180 metres in a single plunge alongside the upper switchbacks, throwing spray across the road and the lower viewing platforms. From the bridge that crosses below the falls — itself on one of the hairpins — the volume of water in early summer can be startling.

There is a marked walking path from the Trollstigen plateau down toward the base of the falls, with several viewing platforms along the way. In peak meltwater (June into early July) the falls are at their fullest; by late August the flow has dropped considerably. Either way, stop the car for it: the bridge view is one of the iconic Norwegian roadside photographs.
