Romsdalshornet

The distinctive horn-shaped peak above the Romsdalen valley

Romsdalshornet — the Romsdal Horn — is the unmistakable pointed peak that rises above the valley south of Åndalsnes. At 1,550 metres it is not the tallest peak in the area, but its sharp, isolated profile makes it the icon of the Romsdal range. It is a serious climb, generally requiring rope work and route-finding skill, and it should only be attempted with a guide or solid alpine experience.

For most visitors the Horn is best appreciated from below. The classic view is from the Romsdalseggen ridge across the valley, where the peak rises in profile against the fjord. From the E136 there are several pull-outs near Sogge bridge with a clean view up the valley to the Horn and the surrounding Trolltindene wall.

A story
Romsdalshornet was first climbed in 1828 by two local farmers, Hans Bjermeland and Christen Hoel, well before mountaineering existed as a sport in Britain or the Alps. They were sent up by the local sheriff to collect a wager and reported back that the summit was perfectly walkable — which it is not.
