Holmenkollen Ski Jump

Oslo's most iconic landmark, with panoramic fjord views from the top

The Holmenkollen ski jump is Oslo's most recognizable landmark: a sweeping steel and concrete arch visible from much of the city, rising above the dark spruce forest of the Nordmarka hills. The current structure was completed in 2011 and replaced a jump that had stood since 1980.

You can ride the lift to the viewing platform at the top of the jump — 417 metres above sea level — for an extraordinary panorama over Oslo and the Oslofjord. The view stretches all the way to Sweden on clear days. From the top, you also get a sense of what it means to stand at the start gate: the drop is vertiginous. The Holmenkollen Ski Museum is at the base, and a combined ticket covers both.

A story
The ski jump at Holmenkollen has been rebuilt 19 times since the first competition here in 1892 — each version taller and more ambitious than the last. The current structure, designed by Julien De Smedt Architects for the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, looks like a giant tuning fork suspended above the hillside. During the 1952 Winter Olympics, held in Oslo, 150,000 spectators crowded these slopes — the largest crowd ever to attend a Winter Olympics event.
