Old Aker Church

Old Aker Church is Oslo's oldest surviving building, a compact Romanesque stone church dating from around 1100. It stands on a rise above the city, beside Vår Frelsers cemetery, with a plain, sturdy presence that feels very different from Oslo's newer civic monuments.

The church is usually seen from the outside, though services and occasional events give chances to enter. Combine it with a walk through the cemetery, where Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Munch are buried, or with the downhill route toward Grünerløkka and the Akerselva.
