"Old Chorzów" is the historic core of the city, north of the main railway line and centred on St Mary Magdalene's parish church. The church, built in 1882 in red-brick neo-Gothic, sits beside a small market square. The streets around it preserve a quieter, more village-like feel than the rest of the modern industrial city — gabled tenements, courtyards, and a couple of decent neighbourhood bars.
The area was settled long before the Königshütte ironworks turned the surrounding fields into smokestacks. Worth a brief wander if you want to see what Chorzów looked like before coal and steel got hold of it.
