Silesian Planetarium

The Silesian Planetarium sits on a low hill in the eastern part of Silesian Park, a domed building with a Zeiss projector at its heart. A long renovation finished in 2022 turned it into one of the most modern planetariums in central Europe, with a 23-metre dome, a foucault pendulum, and observation telescopes still used for research.

Programmes alternate between classic star shows and full-dome films on cosmology and the planets. Some sessions are in English; check the schedule before going. The hilltop site has wide views over the park and the surrounding Silesian conurbation — worth a walk-up even when there are no shows on.

A story
Opened in 1955, it was the largest and oldest planetarium in Poland for decades, and it doubled as an astronomical observatory — a serious research instrument hidden inside an attraction for kids on school trips.
