Silesian Park

At 600 hectares, Silesian Park is by some measures the largest urban park in Europe, sprawling along the boundary between Chorzów and Katowice. It opened in 1958 on land reclaimed from the coal mines and steelworks of Upper Silesia, an act of post-war optimism that turned the heart of the country's grimmest industrial region into a green lung.

Inside the park you'll find more or less everything: a planetarium, a zoo, an open-air ethnographic museum, the Stadion Śląski, the Legendia amusement park, a chairlift, rose gardens, boating lakes, and several restaurants. You can spend a whole day wandering without seeing it all, and the locals do exactly that on summer weekends. Free to enter; individual attractions charge separately.

A story
The park was carved out of slag heaps and pit sumps in the 1950s, on land so contaminated that the planners had to truck in topsoil by the millions of cubic metres before anything would grow. Today it's the largest urban green space in Europe, sitting on what was once one of its blackest industrial scars.
