New Jewish Cemetery

Krakow's New Jewish Cemetery was founded in 1800 and holds more than ten thousand headstones. It is a quieter, more reflective counterpoint to the busy streets of Kazimierz, with graves of rabbis, writers, artists, professors, and other figures from the city's Jewish life.

The cemetery was badly damaged under Nazi occupation, when valuable stones were removed and reused. Returned fragments, the mortuary building, a lapidarium, and a Holocaust memorial now give the place much of its present character.
