Living Museum of Gingerbread

The Living Museum of Gingerbread (Żywe Muzeum Piernika) occupies a medieval building in the old town and runs interactive sessions where visitors bake and decorate their own traditional pierniki using historic wooden moulds. The sessions are led in costume by guides playing the role of 14th-century bakers, which works better than it might sound. Children love it; adults find it genuinely interesting.

Toruń's gingerbread tradition goes back to the Teutonic Knights, who controlled the spice trade in the region and made the town a centre of production. The recipes and moulds have been refined over six centuries. Booking ahead is recommended in summer and during school holidays, when the sessions fill up quickly. There is also a separate Gingerbread Museum nearby with exhibits on the history of production if you prefer a less hands-on approach.

A story
Toruń gingerbread has been made here since at least the 14th century, and the city's bakers once held a legally protected monopoly on production — competing towns were forbidden to sell their gingerbread within Toruń's markets.
