Praia do Benagil

Praia do Benagil is the small cove with the now-famous sea cave at its back. The beach itself is modest — a strip of sand below the cliffs, reached by a steep flight of steps from the village — but the cave is one of the most photographed natural features in Portugal.

Most visitors arrive by boat trip from Armacao or Carvoeiro. The roof of the main chamber has a circular hole open to the sky, lighting a small sand beach inside. Boats can no longer land but they idle in the cave for photographs. Kayak and stand-up paddleboard tours are an alternative and let you spend longer.

A story
The famous round skylight in the cave roof — the Algar de Benagil — is a collapsed sinkhole, not a man-made opening. Sea kayakers can paddle through the cave entrance at low tide; landing on the small sand beach inside is now banned to protect the floor from erosion.
