Citania de Briteiros is one of northern Portugal's most evocative Castro-culture sites, spread across a hilltop north of Guimaraes. The circular stone house foundations, paved lanes, defensive walls, and bath structure make the settlement unusually readable even if you are not an archaeology specialist.
It is best paired with the Martins Sarmento Society museum in Guimaraes, where finds from Briteiros help explain what you are seeing on the hill. On site, the pleasure is more elemental: granite, wind, and the strange intimacy of walking through a town plan that is more than two thousand years old.
