Santiago Square (Praça de Santiago)

A smaller, more intimate square just east of Oliveira Square, lined with whitewashed houses on granite arcades. Tradition holds that pilgrims travelling north to Santiago de Compostela passed through here, which is where the name comes from.

The square is quieter than Oliveira and the cafés tend to be cheaper. In late June and early July it becomes the centre of the Festas Gualterianas, the city's main summer festival.
