Padrão do Salado

A small 14th-century Gothic canopy in the middle of Oliveira Square, raised on four slender columns and protecting a stone cross. King Afonso IV had it built to mark the 1340 Christian victory over the Marinid Moroccans at the Battle of the Salado in Andalusia.

It is easy to walk past — it is no bigger than a bus shelter — but it is one of the few free-standing Gothic monuments in Portugal and has been a National Monument since 1910. Stop, look up at the carved capitals, and notice the worn cross at the centre.
