Martins Sarmento Society Museum

A regional archaeology museum housed in an idiosyncratic building that is half Neo-Byzantine (the 1908 wing) and half Brutalist (the 1967 extension). The collection covers Iron Age and Roman finds from the surrounding hill forts — the citânias — that ring Guimarães, including stone heads, weapons, and granite door lintels.

The star pieces are the Colossus of Pedralva, a vast granite warrior figure, and the lintel of the Pedra Formosa from the Citânia de Briteiros, carved with intricate geometric patterns. It is the place to make sense of what you see if you visit the hill forts themselves.
