Toural Square (Largo do Toural)

The big open square on the southern edge of the historic centre, dominated on one side by São Pedro Basilica and the great pastel facades of the 18th- and 19th-century town houses on the other. It is the main meeting point of the modern city and the obvious threshold between the new town and the medieval streets to the north.

There is a fountain in the middle, plenty of benches, and a string of cafés along the edges. From here, walk north up Rua de Santo António into the historic centre, or south to the railway station and the Vila Flor gardens.
