Vila Viçosa

Alentejo marble town shaped by the Braganza dukes and their long royal palace.

Vila Viçosa is a small Alentejo town with an outsized royal past. The Dukes of Braganza made it their seat, and their long marble palace still dominates the Terreiro do Paço with a facade that feels almost too grand for the quiet streets around it.

Marble is the other story here. It comes from the quarries around town and turns up in palaces, churches, paving, and ordinary details that would be showpieces elsewhere. Vila Viçosa is best as a half-day or overnight stop between Évora, Elvas, and Estremoz: slow, handsome, and heavy with Portuguese dynastic history.

Eating Out

Food in Vila Viçosa leans toward Alentejo cooking: pork, game, bread soups, olive oil, and hearty regional dishes. The best choices sit within a few minutes of the palace and old centre.
