Mangalia sits at the southern end of Romania's Black Sea coast, on the site of the ancient Greek colony of Callatis, founded in the 6th century BC. Today it is a spa town known for its therapeutic treatments — mineral-rich mud baths, thalassotherapy, and the Romanian Gerovital cure. Clinics and consulting rooms are open year-round, so you can combine treatment with a seaside stay.
The beach is wider and less crowded than the resorts further north, and the remains of the ancient fortifications are still visible in places. The Callatis Archaeological Museum documents the city's 2,600 years of habitation, and the Esmahan Sultan Mosque, built in 1590, is the oldest mosque still in use in Romania. A few kilometres inland, Movile Cave contains one of the most scientifically remarkable sealed ecosystems on earth — not open to visitors, but worth knowing about. South of town, the coast becomes wilder as it approaches the Bulgarian border.
