Predeal

Romania's highest town, a Bucegi Mountains ski and hiking base between Brașov and Bucharest.

Predeal is the highest town in Romania, sitting at about 1,100 metres in the Bucegi Mountains on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. It is a modest ski resort — smaller and quieter than neighbouring Sinaia or Poiana Brașov — with a handful of runs on the Clăbucet ski area suited to beginners and intermediates.

In summer, the surrounding forests and mountain trails make it a pleasant base for hiking. The Piatra Mare massif to the north is the most rewarding destination, with trails leading to panoramic limestone plateaus at nearly 1,850 metres. The Predeal Monastery, tucked into the forest on the southern edge of town, is a quiet Orthodox complex dating to 1774. The town straddles the main road and railway between Brașov and Bucharest, so it is easy to reach and makes a practical overnight stop if you are travelling between the two cities.

Getting There

Predeal is well connected by train. CFR Călători operates regular services on the Bucharest–Brașov main line, and the journey from Bucharest's Gara de Nord takes around two hours; from Brașov it is about 30 minutes. Trains stop at the small Predeal station in the centre of the town.

By road, the DN1 (E60) national highway passes straight through town. The drive from Brașov is around 30 km; from Bucharest approximately 160 km, with the mountain section of the road prone to winter closures and heavy weekend traffic in ski season.
