The oldest and most famous bridge over the Fontanka River, Anichkov Bridge is best known for its four dramatic bronze Horse Tamer sculptures by Baron Peter Klodt, installed in their final form in 1850. Each statue depicts a different stage of a man taming a wild horse, inspired by the ancient Dioscuri sculptures on Rome's Quirinal Hill. The bronzes were so admired that Tsar Nicholas I gave earlier castings as gifts to the kings of Prussia and Naples. During the Siege of Leningrad, the statues were buried in the nearby Anichkov Palace garden to protect them from German bombardment. Today they remain one of St. Petersburg's most photographed landmarks along Nevsky Prospekt.
