Peter the Great's modest Summer Palace sits in the Summer Garden on the banks of the Fontanka River, built between 1710 and 1714. Compared to the city's later imperial residences it is remarkably restrained — a two-story Dutch-style house that reveals something of Peter's personal tastes before the baroque extravagance took over.
