Petrogradsky

Petrogradsky is the island district north of the city center, dominated by the golden spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress — the original nucleus of St Petersburg, where Peter the Great established the city in 1703. The fortress cathedral holds the tombs of every Russian emperor from Peter onward, and the prison within its walls held everyone from Dostoevsky to Trotsky. Nearby, the modest Cabin of Peter the Great, the city's oldest surviving structure, contrasts sharply with the imperial grandeur that followed. Beyond the fortress, Petrogradsky has a quieter residential character with Art Nouveau apartment buildings, the leafy Alexandrovsky Park, and the city zoo. The Mosque of St Petersburg, with its striking turquoise dome modeled on Samarkand's Gur-e-Amir, adds an unexpected silhouette to the skyline. It's a slower-paced side of the city worth an afternoon.
