Yul Brynner's Birthplace and Monument

Vladivostok has a fondness for its most famous export: Yul Brynner, the bald Hollywood star who was born here in 1920. A bronze statue of Brynner in his characteristic Magnificent Seven pose — arms crossed, leather jacket — stands in the Arbat pedestrian zone near his birthplace. The house where he was born is on Aleutskaya Street and is marked with a plaque, though it is not open to visitors.

The statue has become one of the city's most popular photo spots, particularly for Russian tourists who enjoy the improbable connection between this remote Pacific port and the golden age of Hollywood. The pedestrian zone around it has cafes and souvenir shops and is pleasant for an evening walk.

A story
Yul Brynner was born Yuliy Borisovich Briner in Vladivostok in 1920, the son of a Swiss engineer and a Russian Romani woman. He left Russia as a child and eventually became one of Hollywood's most recognisable stars — best known for The Magnificent Seven and his defining role as Pharaoh Rameses in The Ten Commandments. Few Hollywood legends have such an improbable origin story.
