Zlatibor Plateau Hiking

The Zlatibor plateau has an extensive network of marked hiking trails crossing open meadows, forested ridges, and river valleys. The terrain is genuine mountain country — the altitude sits between 1,000 and 1,400 metres, and the meadows are wide and undulating, with views across to the hills of Bosnia on clear days.

Most trails start from the resort town itself, with routes of varying difficulty marked by the Serbian Mountaineering Association. The trail to Tornik peak is the most popular — it gains about 400 metres from the resort and the views from the gondola terminus are the best on the plateau. For something quieter, the trails east toward Ribnica Lake pass through beech forest and rarely see other walkers. Mountain bike hire is available in the resort if you prefer two wheels.

A story
The Zlatibor plateau is one of the few places in Serbia where wolves, brown bears, and lynx are still present in the wild. Most hikers will never see them, but the knowledge that they are there changes how you read the forest. The plateau has been a protected wildlife area since the 1980s.
