Sirogojno Village

Sirogojno is a quiet village about 15 km from Zlatibor town, known for two things: the Staro Selo open-air museum and the hand-knitting tradition that has sustained the village's economy for fifty years. The combination makes it one of the more rewarding half-day trips from the resort.

The village itself is pleasant to walk through — traditional stone and timber farmhouses, kitchen gardens, and the unhurried pace of a place that has always supported itself from its own resources. The workshop of the Old Craft cooperative is open to visitors; you can watch the knitters at work and buy directly from the people who made what you are purchasing. The patterns are genuinely traditional, derived from embroidery designs that predate industrialisation.

A story
In 1968, a group of women in Sirogojno began knitting traditional Zlatibor patterns under a cooperative arrangement. By the 1970s their sweaters were being sold in European department stores. The cooperative, now known as Old Craft, has produced over two million garments and is largely responsible for putting Zlatibor on the international map — predating the ski resort by a decade.
