Uvac Monastery

The Uvac Monastery sits above the Uvac river gorge about 18 km southwest of Zlatibor, in a setting of exceptional beauty. The monastery itself is a Serbian Orthodox foundation with a history dating back to the medieval period. It is active and welcoming to respectfully dressed visitors.

The real reason to come, however, is the view. The Uvac gorge cuts through white limestone in a series of hairpin meanders, visible from several viewpoints above the monastery. The Griffon Vulture colony — among the largest in Europe — is visible throughout the day, and a boat trip on the river (arranged through agencies in Zlatibor) passes directly under the cliffs where they nest.

A story
The Uvac Monastery stands above the Uvac river gorge, one of the most dramatic landscapes in western Serbia. The gorge is home to one of Europe's largest colonies of Griffon Vultures — around 700 birds nest in the limestone cliffs, and they can often be seen soaring on thermals visible from the monastery.
