Kadinjača Memorial Complex

The Kadinjača Memorial Complex stands on the ridge above Užice, about 35 km north of Zlatibor, marking the site of one of the most significant battles of the Yugoslav resistance in the Second World War. The centrepiece is a dramatic concrete monument — a series of angular white slabs rising from the hillside, designed by sculptor Gradimir Aleksić and completed in 1979. It is one of the finest examples of Yugoslav socialist monumental architecture still standing.

The setting is quiet and austere, with good views across the surrounding valleys. A small museum on site explains the Battle of Kadinjača and the Užice Republic — the short-lived liberated territory the Partisans controlled in western Serbia in late 1941 before being driven out by the German autumn offensive. The site is easily combined with a visit to Užice and the trip back to Zlatibor.

A story
On 29 November 1941, around 600 Partisan fighters of the Užice Republic made a last stand against a combined Nazi and Nedić force ten times their number at Kadinjača. They were almost entirely wiped out. The date — chosen deliberately — later became Yugoslavia's Republic Day, celebrated annually until the country dissolved.
