Executioner's Bastion

The Executioner's Bastion is a well-preserved section of the medieval city walls at the northeastern edge of the old town, dating from the 15th century. The bastion is a semi-circular tower that formed part of the fortifications protecting the city from the east. It takes its name from its traditional association with the city's executioner, who was said to live here — close to the tools of his trade, and conveniently separate from the respectable citizens of the town.

The bastion has been restored and can be entered. It now houses a small café and is used for occasional cultural events. The surrounding section of wall and the earthwork embankment are preserved, providing a sense of the original fortification layout. From the top of the bastion there is a reasonable view over the eastern edge of the old town.
